Background

The Vegreville Preschool Association was started by members of the Vegreville Community 40 years ago.  The resounding belief that community youth would benefit from a preschool program has allowed the Vegreville Preschool Program to exist and flourish in those years. So much so that in the late 90s, the Community, the Association, and with the support of the Town of Vegreville purchased our current building, 5106 - 48 Ave., so that the Preschool would always have a home.

Another very important part of our past came with the partnership with CALS & the Headstart Program 22 years ago (1997 to present). The pairing is a natural fit as the program gives children who have special learning needs or other difficulties inclusion in our program. It brings additional resources to our classroom not just in terms of tools but staff and specialists. Together we strive not just to prepare our children for kindergarten but give them the ability to be outstanding members of our community.

Current Program

The Vegreville Preschool program is based on the Kindergarten Curriculum as issued by Alberta Education, although the subject matter has been tailored to our young learners. We operate by a 'Learn through Play' philosophy. We try to prepare early learners for Kindergarten through fun and hands on experiences. Children participate in activities such as Mozart Math, Animated Literacy, community walks, gross motor field trips, theme days, and dramatic play. Children are also introduced to a variety of musical instruments, fine motor learning techniques, and monthly theme centers are set up in our classroom. Our daily schedules give students opportunities for gross motor play, literacy in the form of listening to books (read both by staff and guests), alphabet recognition, fine motor tasks, themed play centers, creative expression, as well as special guest visits and community field trips.

New for 2012 saw two new programs being added 'Ready-Set-Grow' which partnered with Speech Language Pathologists exposed children to Sharing and Rhyming. And the SPEAK (Safe Preschoolers Education and Awareness Kit) program which promotes healthy ways of sharing feelings among preschoolers.
